Frequently Asked Questions
1. How often should I have my eyes tested?
A Routine eye test should be done every 2 years, regardless of your age and whether or not you have a concern with your eyes. Many eye conditions do not present with any symptoms or visual disturbances, and can only be detected with an eye test.
2. When should I take my child to have his/her eyes tested?
Your child is never too young to have an eye examination. Children should have an eye test before schooling age even if you don't think there are any problems, because children don't usually know what to expect with their vision. An eye test is important if there is a family history of eye conditions such as short-sightedness, long-sightedness, astigmatism, lazy eyes or a turned eye. For some of these conditions it is very important that an eye examination is done at an early age, otherwise it can be difficult to treat later on in life. 3. What do I need to do to find out more about contact lenses?
Contact lenses are extremly popular now for uses anywhere from occasional wear to constant use. You will need to book in for an initial consultation with the optometrist and discuss contact lenses in your exam. The optometrist will be able to determine suitability and discuss which is the best option for each individual. There are lenses available which can be used once and thrown away, lenses to leave in for a month straight and even lenses to correct reading and distance at the same time! At the end of the consultation and after answering all of your questions, you can decide whether or not you want to go ahead with it.
4. Will my eye examination be bulk billed to Medicare?
Yes, if you have a Medicare card then most general consultations will be bulk-billed to Medicare. Contact lens consultations normally attract a private fee, however, if your prescription is greater than a specified power, then contact lens consultations can be bulk-billed. The optometrist will be able to determine this on an initial consultation which will be bulk-billed.
5. When I work on the computer all day long I get fatigue and headaches, is this eye-related?
Eyestrain, fatigue, headaches and blurring vision when using the computer or reading is most likely eye-related. The optometrist will be able to determine this with an eye examination and can prescribe spectacles or eye exercises to alleviate the problem.
